Volunteer Gives 20,000 Hours

Claire, in a rare moment of relaxation

Since 1987, volunteer Claire Hinrichs has been donating her time and talent to numerous non-profit organizations. Retired from John Deere as a data processor in 1986, Claire took up her volunteer calling the very next year when husband Don asked her to help with the record keeping for his retiree volunteer program at General Mills, a role that she continues to this day.

Claire also joined RSVP at that time in her life, and has been a seasonal volunteer in the Hennepin County Property Tax Department for the last 25 years. She is the only volunteer in the department, assisting staff every May and October to process thousands of property tax payments. “I just love working with figures”, says Claire, of why this volunteer role has appealed to her. In addition to math and finance knowledge, manual dexterity and excellent organizational skills are needed for this position. “We used to have a mortgage company that would send in 20 to 23 batches of stubs and each one had 100 parcels in them. I had to add each one up to verify the total that was sent in. [Claire] would help me with the adding and it would amaze me how fast she could go with only using one or two fingers on the calculator. Sometimes I would try and race when she wasn’t looking to see if I could go faster”, said one employee. Employees have also appreciated Claire’s smiling personality and positive attitude during a very chaotic time of year. In this era of tight budgets and economic concerns, the tax department has been especially very thankful for Claire’s volunteer contribution.

In addition to keeping the records current for the General Mills retiree program, now known as G Alumni, Claire acts as the volunteer recruiter. G Alumni volunteers work on projects either in the office or out in the community every Thursday. Claire’s job is to contact as many volunteers as needed to fill the specific job requests, with some jobs requiring as many as 40 volunteers. Claire’s preferred method of communication is a personal contact; “So many people do email these days, but I like the phone. I get a hold of them and I know immediately whether or not they can help”. Claire then helps direct the work of the volunteers so that the project, whether it is a mailing for the Salvation Army, packaging pedometers for Health Partners, or participating in the wheelchair archery program at Courage Center, is done correctly and successfully. “I’m very fussy and want things done right… I think that’s why they keep me on”.

What motivates this 86 year old to do all this volunteer work? “When you’ve had a good life like I’ve had, you want to give back. You can’t just take all the time, you’ve got to give”, smiles Claire. “I get satisfaction from volunteering and helping others… having a reason to get up and out in the morning contributes to keeping me healthy”.

Reaching her goal of 20,000 hours of volunteerism has also kept Claire motivated. For those of us who do not have Claire’s head for “figures”, that breaks down into roughly 17 volunteer hours per week for the last 25 years, an amount equivalent to a half-time job! RSVP salutes Claire for her many hours of dedicated service to the community.

A Pleasant Evening At Home?

On October 28, 2011 Scott Carver Project Community Connect served over 400 individuals in our community who are Living on Little. We met families living in cars, camping, doubled up with friends and family, a man who carried a cot on his back. Winter is imminent and we need to come together to find solutions so that our neighbors have a safe, decent, and warm place to stay.

On Thursday, December 1 "Heading Home Scott-Carver" will be hosting a community meeting to discuss issues concerning those in our community who are without housing - those who are doubled up, living in places not meant for human habitation, homeless. All members of the community are both welcome and encouraged to attend this event.

The meeting will be held at St Mark's Church Hall, 350 Atwood Street South, Shakopee from 7 to 9 p.m.

For more information, contact Allison Streich at 952-448-7715 x 2803.

Minnesota SMARxT DISPOSAL launches

Do you have old or expired medications sitting in your medicine cabinet, but are unsure about how to properly dispose of them? SMARxT DISPOSAL is a new public awareness campaign designed to educate Minnesotans about the safest way to dispose of these medications. Contrary to previous advice, flushing medications or pouring them down the drain is not recommended due to potential harmful effects on waterways. Instead, follow this three step process to most safely dispose of the medications in your household trash:

1) Pour medication into a sealable bag. If medication is a solid, add water to dissolve. Remove all personal information from container, if needed.
2) Add kitty litter, sawdust, coffee grounds (anything to make medication less appealing to eat) to the plastic bag.
3) Seal the plastic bag completely and throw it in the trash.

Alternatively, many counties are now hosting prescription drug take back events (Hennepin and Carver), or are establishing permanent drop-off spots (Scott) where medications are collected and disposed. Check with your county website if you'd like to find out more about this option.

More details can be found on the SMARxT DISPOSAL website at www.MNSmartDisposal.com

2nd Annual Scott-Carver Community Connect a success!

The second annual Scott-Carver Project Community Connect was held on Friday, October 28th in Shakopee. Four hundred adults and children came through this one day event geared for individuals "living on little". Guests were able to receive many services on-the-spot, including doctor exams, immunizations, dental services for children, mammograms, vision exams, hair cuts, driver's license/i.d. renewals and more. Guests, with the help of volunteer guides to help them navigate through the available resources, were able to get vital information on housing, employment, child care options, and a vast array of other community resources.

RSVP members provided support to the event by acting as guest intake/navigators, refreshment attendants, and phone solicitation prior to the event. All felt it was a worthwhile volunteer activity, and felt it made the concerns of those living at or near homelessness real to them.

Thank you volunteers for lending a helping hand to those in need in our community!

RSVP working to help end homelessness in Scott/Carver Counties

Volunteers from the Greater Metro RSVP will be helping to end homelessness in Scott and Carver Counties on Friday, October 28th 2011 when they participate in the 2nd Annual Scott-Carver Project Community Connect (PCC). The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Minnesota School of Business-Shakopee Campus. PCC provides a wide variety of services and hospitality for people struggling to meet basic needs. Based on a national model, this event provides services at one convenient location to those in our community who are homeless or at rish of becoming homeless. Volunteers are a critical component to the success of PCC, helping with set up and clean up, food service, and most critically, acting as guides for individuals and families who come seeking help that day.

Many more volunteers, from ANY county, are needed that day. For more information, or to sign up as a volunteer, please visit or call RSVP at 952-945-4161.

Help Mayo Clinic With Healthy Aging Focus Group

The Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation has recently opened the Healthy Aging & Independent Living Lab (HAIL). The goal is to look for insights and opportunities to keep individuals healthy and allow them to remain independent. To gain a better understanding of needs beyond clinical conditions they often conduct interviews, focus groups, and observations.

Three focus groups are scheduled for Tuesday, May 17th, 2011 and active older adult participation is needed. Focus groups will be conducted at the UCare Skyway Center (950 Nicollet Mall, Suite 290, Minneapolis) and Mill City Clinic (Zenith Condominium Building on 901 S. Second St., Suite A, Minneapolis). Focus group times are 10:00-11:30 a.m., 1:00-2:00 p.m., and 5:30-7:00 p.m.

Each session will include 7 participants and will be led by a team from the Center for Innovation. A variety of topics will be discussed and HAIL will draw on your experiences to help gain insights as they move forward in developing the new lab.

If you have questions or would like to sign up to participate in a focus group, contact Rajiv Ramdeo at 650-814-2469 or rajiv.ramdeo@uci.edu. FREE PARKING. Refreshments and beverages will be served at each session.
